Inspiring Designers

Between 2001 and 2004 I interviewed a number of leading designers from across the world on the subject of what influenced them in their work and what inspired them. Some of the designers involved in the project included Ron Arad, Shin and Tomoko Azumi, Rowan and Erwan Bouroullec, Matali Crasset, Nick Crosbie, DUMoffice, Mark Dytham, Marti Guixe, Thomas Heatherwick, Scott Henderson, Ichiro Iwasaki, Hella Jongerius, RADI, Karim Rashid, Tejo Remy, Arnout Visser, Marcel Wanders, and Tokujin Yoshioka. Each interview was loosely based around significant “cultural totems” including art, film, literature, historical figures, architectural icons, transportation design and other areas. The culmination of the project was the publication of a book entitled “Inspiring Designers” published by Black Dog Publishers, London in 2005 and the creation and screening of a short film of the same title (VHS Film, 16 minutes), screened at The Lighthouse Gallery of Architecture and Design (Gallery 5), Glasgow, 27 September to 1 October, 2002.
